What causes acne spots?
Sebum (oil) has a lot to do with acne spots. Sebum (oil) is secreted by the sebaceous glands found deep down the pores of your skin. It moisturizes and protects the surface of your skin, thus performing a very important function. Still, when dirt, grime and dust mixes with sebum, the skin is affected and your pores get clogged up, like a cork on a bottle. When sebum gets stuck deep inside your pores, the acne bacteria that live in your pores multiply by feeding on the sebum and causes inflammation. This is how you end up with your unpleasant acne spots.
White, black, red, yellow…Acne spots come in different forms.
'White acne' is a small protrusion on the skin (called comedones). Your pore gets clogged up and sebum settles at the bottom of the pore. Dirt, grime and dust attach and oxidize (Oxygen in the air makes the sebum turn color from clear to black and cause damage. Metals rust and coins change color due to oxidation.). When your pore opens and becomes black, this is called 'black acne.' Underneath the surface of 'white acne' and 'black acne,' acne bacteria multiply and causes inflammation, making the spot painful to touch. This is 'red acne' When this becomes infected and pus forms, turning the spot yellow, then you have 'yellow acne.'
Important! Keep your skin clean
As your acne spot goes from white to red to yellow, it is steadily getting worse. The initial cause is the pores getting blocked. It is thus important to apply proper skincare: keeping your skin clean helps prevent acne from forming or getting worse. 'Red acne' and 'yellow acne' are infected spots with pus. So, it is important to wash your face gently and to keep it clean. Never wash your face roughly and do not scrub with a towel. If you pick or burst your spot, or if you leave it unattended, you might get an acne scar! Hence, never ever do these things. You should go and see a skin specialist quickly.
Handy info - How your diet affects acne | Take note! Healthy skin is not only about keeping your skin clean. You must also eat a balanced diet and lead a regular lifestyle with plenty of sleep. Try not to be too tempted by fast food , fatty or high-sugar foods. Eat your greens and fruits, which will supply you with vitamins. Such food items are said to be effective in preventing acne. (Do not just concentrate on vitamins. Try and eat a balanced diet!)
