The search for Singapore's best student dancer ended on 17 Jan 2009 after an intense battle between 8 of the best student dancers.
It was indeed an epic showdown at ZOUK with all 8 teams bringing their 'A' performances that night, ready to vie for the coveted spot to represent Singapore in the inaugural GATSBY Styling Dance Contest Asia Finals.
The Singapore Champion, Floor Techniques Crew (FTC) - formed by three talented youths aged 18 to 24 - wowed the judges and audience with their high-powered B-Boy moves and break-dancing acrobatics. They will now represent Singapore at the Asian Finals in Tokyo, Japan on 28 February 2009, to pit themselves against the best student dancers from Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan.
Floor Techniques Crew also walked away with $2,000 cash, $200 GATSBY product hamper and a trophy.
Close to 1000 people attended the Singapore Finals, comprising of the media, supporters of the eight finalists, and members of the public, all coming to witness the first Asian dance competition ever organized by GATSBY. Long queues started to form as early as 2 hours before the show, signifying the sheer excitement of not just the contestants, but the audience as well.
The judges of the finals included George Chan (dance veteran who was also one of the judges on MediaCorp's dance talent quest show, "The Dance Floor"), Sheikh Haikel (local well-known hip-hop entertainer and radio DJ) and Rosalyn Lee (Perfect 10 DJ and a dance enthusiast). They were unanimous in their praise on the high standard of creativity and showmanship of the competition and gave each team useful pointers after their performance. The 1st runner-up went to T-Dot, a team of three university students who displayed great finesse, showmanship and charisma in their dance routine. With sharp, well-choreographed moves, T-Dot's energy on stage was contagious, and quickly became one of the crowd favorites.
Solo participant Nicholas Phua, a.k.a. Nikz, grabbed the 3rd prize. Nikz's flashy retro-looking costume and humorous yet skillful dance moves charmed the judges and audience alike.
The GATSBY Special Award went to the youngest team, Ultimate Dance Crew (UDC), comprising of 3 members, aged 13 to 15, who stood out with their nifty well-coordinated dance routine and likeability factor. They were an instant hit with the crowd as many were amazed by their dance talents despite their young age.
The final event also saw renowned hairstylist, Jeric See and his dynamic team of Japanese stylists Nakamura and Satoshi perform a hair styling demonstration using the GATSBY Moving Rubber Range to create the hottest hair looks of the season. Accompanying the hair styling show was a pulsating and electrifying music atmosphere created by the exclusive collaboration of one of Asia's best deejays DJ Ko Flow and Singapore's No.1 beat boxer Dharni.
All the contestants have every reason to feel proud for their excellent performance in this very first GATSBY Styling Dance Contest. Despite the fact that only one team could go on to represent Japan, every single team were winners in their own right with performances that they will always remember in their hearts.
Floor Techniques Crew will now represent Singapore in the GATSBY Styling Dance Contest in Tokyo, Japan on the 28th Feb 2009. |
